@3HOW ARE FICTION AND RPGs RELATED?
@2=================================
@1
IMO, in the main, role playing is based on fiction, very little fiction
(apart from, eg the Dragonlance books) has been based on RPGs. For example
if you look in the D&D books they recommend several books (eg The Lord of
the Rings) which are a) useful sources and b) have influenced the game.
This, of course, doesn't include the many RPGs which have been based on
books/ genres eg Middle Earth, Cyberpunk, Ringworld, Cthulu etc where,
obviously, the fiction is a definite predecessor.
Fiction is not a substitute for role playing (ie people reading fiction as
an alternative to role playing) because, apart from "Fighting Fantasy" etc,
in fiction the reader is effectively passive and just an onlooker, rather
than a participant as in role playing, but, of course, if someone prefers to
read a book rather than play an RPG, then that is their choice.
Ideas (apart from those taken directly from fiction, cf Middle Earth) can be
gained from almost any good fiction and not necessarily of the genre that
the RPG is based on. Ideas can be mixed and matched as desired, all that is
required is some imagination (and a devious mind!).
Role playing and fiction are separate concepts, however they have many
links, mostly one way, however there is some feedback from RPGs to fiction
which will increase as more people play RPGs and either write fiction or
expect more from the fiction they read.
